One of the most frequent questions we hear at Chicago Dance is “What should I wear?”
Your shoes, clothes, jewelry and personal grooming are all important things to consider before heading out to class.
Shoes are always a new student’s biggest worry. Most new dancers don’t own a pair of dance shoes. Most students take a few classes before investing in a pair of dance shoes. Ultimately, we encourage you to invest in a good pair of dance shoes. Until then the best choice is a pair of leather soled shoes that are lightweight, snug fitting and not too stiff. For women, a pair of low heel pumps or ballet flats can be a good choice. Sneakers or street shoes with a rubber sole will grip the floor and will make it hard for you to turn or move quickly. If you go the sneaker route, a pair of Keds or skate shoes, with a flat sole and little tread are the best choice.
For women:
- Pump with a low or medium heel
- Ballet Flat
- Leather soles are best. (Well Suede is best!) Avoid rubber – it’s too hard to spin on.
- Avoid sandals or slippers
For men:
- Shoes with leather soles. Avoid rubber soles
- Men’s leather dress shoes as long as they don’t have rubber soles.
We are pretty casual at Chicago Dance, and the most important factor to consider when you are dressing is comfort: yours and your potential partners’. The instructors will dress professionally, but we want you to feel comfortable wearing whatever works for you. You need to be able to move easily in your clothing. If it’s too tight you’ll have trouble moving around, and if it’s too loose you may find yourself readjusting all lesson. Your clothes shouldn’t be rough of scratchy on the outside either, as your partners will have to touch them all night.
Our recommendation on dress for men is simple: pants and a shirt. You’re done. Jackets aren’t necessary, and may be problematic during certain dances, not to mention too warm.
For ladies, there is a bit more to think about. Skirts are popular at our classes, but before you show up to class make sure you can move easily in your skirt. Try spinning and taking big steps. If you’re conscious of your skirt being too short or too tight wear something else. Likewise sleeveless shirts or tank tops can be awkward as straps can migrate off of your shoulder and new partners may be uncomfortable touching so much skin.
Jewelry can be a problem for everyone. Rings, bracelets, watches and belt buckles can snag in hair or on clothes, both yours and your partners. The best bet, if you can, is to leave them home. Well, maybe not the belt buckle…
It may seem obvious, but think about personal hygiene before you come to class. Your partner is inviting you into their personal space, do your best to be a good guest. Powerful cologne and perfume can irritate some people, as can some styling products. When it doubt, don’t wear it. Tie back long hair, hold the garlic and onions and pop a mint before class just for safety’s sake.
These are just a few things to consider, and every day we hear new questions. Feel free to give us all call if you have any questions about your first class or dance etiquette.
