You are planning on taking wedding dance lessons to prepare for your first dance…

If you’ve never danced a step in your life and the thought of just walking into a dance studio simply terrifies you, then you need to read this blog! The truth is, taking your first dance lesson can feel a little intimidating.  But it doesn’t have to be this way.  Here’s our beginners guide that takes the mystery out of the whole process so you will know exactly what to expect….
great results from wedding dance lessons

1. Make The Call

The first step, of course, is actually making the call.  Check out what options are available for private instruction or group classes and make an appointment for an initial consultation.

2. Wedding Dance Consultation

Prior to your first wedding dance lesson, you will have a short consultation of around 30 minutes.  During this time, we will get to know you and complete the appropriate paperwork.  It’s also a great chance to discuss your vision and what you want to achieve with your wedding dance lessons.  In preparing for a wedding dance, this meeting is the chance to have a chat about your goals.

To make the most out of your first consultation, it’s best to give some thought to these things in advance:

  • Are you looking for a simple and understated dance? Or, do you wish to make a statement with something a bit ‘flashier’?
  • Have you already got some special music in mind? If you do, bring the music with you (CD, mp3, or iPod is best). If you don’t yet have music in mind, your dance teacher can absolutely help you with this.
  • Does your music need to be edited? For example, shortening a song or combining multiple songs.
  • What is the layout and size of your venue? As this will affect the choreography of your dance.
  • Where will you be prior to your dance and how will you enter the dance floor? For example, at a wedding you might be seated or making an entrance to the room directly onto the dance floor.
  • Where are you headed after you’ve finished your dance? Your dance teacher will choreograph an appropriate exit to suit.
  • Are you wanting to learn basic dance patterns, including the important skills of lead and follow? Or are you wanting a fully choreographed dance to suit your wedding or event?

It is ok if you don’t have all the answers so don’t stress! We can offer suggestions based on our many years of experience working with clients for weddings and events of every size and style.

3. Your First Wedding Dance Lesson

Now it’s onto the exciting part of your dance journey! Your first wedding dance lesson will go for 45 minutes.  You will start learning some very basic steps in the style of dance that best fits your music.  This could be waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha, swing, rumba, salsa, or a number of other dances.  The most important thing to remember for your first wedding dance lesson is to relax and have some fun!  The steps will be simple, regardless of your level of dance experience, so there’s absolutely nothing to worry about.

On a practical note, we recommend wearing shoes that will stay securely on your feet, so avoid wearing flip-flops, sandals or shoes that may slip off. If you have the shoes that you plan to wear for your wedding, we recommend that you bring them with you to your dance lessons. This will help you to get used to dancing in your shoes (especially important if they are new), and it will make you feel more comfortable and confident for the main event.

  1. Your next wedding dance lessons

Whether you’ve asked us to custom create a dance or you’re interested in refining the basics of lead and follow, your subsequent wedding dance lessons will help you to build on your dance skills each lesson.  You will have an entrance and exit for your dance as well as some simple dance poses (such as dips).  This will provide ample opportunities for your photographer (if you have one) to gather some great shots.  You will also learn the key elements of performing and the focus is on making you both feel comfortable and confident on the dance floor.

Taking wedding dance lessons together is a great way to bond with each other.  It’s a lot of fun learning something new and it’s a fantastic opportunity to create lasting memories together!  Contact us to start your dance journey today.
